Why Is GPU Rendering Cheaper Per Frame on Cloud?

The math is straightforward. GPU rendering is 3-6× faster per frame than CPU, which means fewer billable minutes on iRender. Even though the GPU server ($15.80/hour for 4× RTX 4090) costs more per hour than the CPU server ($7.90/hour for 64-core Threadripper), the speed advantage more than compensates.

Example with my 300-frame test: Redshift GPU took 19 minutes = 0.32 hours × $15.80 = $5.00. Arnold CPU took 1 hour 50 minutes = 1.83 hours × $7.90 = $14.50. GPU cost 66% less despite a higher hourly rate. This relationship holds for most animation scenes, the only exception is scenes that exceed GPU VRAM limits (24 GB per RTX 4090), forcing fallback to CPU.

When Does CPU Rendering Actually Win on Cost?

CPU wins in 3 specific scenarios. First: GarageFarm’s distributed CPU rendering for 500+ frame sequences. GarageFarm distributes frames across dozens of CPU nodes simultaneously, finishing 300 frames in 12-18 minutes. At $15.40 total ($0.051/frame), GarageFarm CPU is more expensive per frame than iRender GPU, but nearly as fast in wall-clock time. Second: scenes exceeding GPU VRAM. If your scene uses more than 24 GB VRAM (dense Geometry Nodes, high-resolution volumetrics, extreme texture sets), the GPU can’t fit the scene in memory. CPU rendering has no practical RAM ceiling on iRender’s 256 GB servers; these scenes render slowly but reliably. In my experience, approximately 8% of animation scenes exceed GPU VRAM limits.

Third: renderers without GPU support. Corona is CPU-only. Mantra (Houdini) is CPU-only. If your pipeline uses these renderers, CPU is your only option.
