As a 3D artist, working on animation projects made me realize that rendering is not only about speed or powerful hardware, but also about how well the entire workflow is managed across hundreds or even thousands of frames. The type of render farm I choose can significantly impact that process, as some services focus on simplicity and quick setup, while others offer deeper control over the system and rendering environment. In this article, I’ll show you the differences between Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) and Software as a Service (SaaS) render farms which I’ve used for my projects, and how each one performs in animation workflows. Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) render farm

An IaaS render farm is essentially a cloud-based solution where you rent raw computing power instead of using a pre-configured rendering platform. Rather than relying on a fixed system, you are given access to powerful remote machines, typically equipped with high-end CPUs or GPUs and you are responsible for setting up and managing your own working environment.

The biggest advantage I think this type of render farm brings here is the freedom. You’re not limited by preset configurations. You can choose your operating system, install any 3D software you need, set up exact renderer versions, and control plugins and render settings to match your pipeline. This level of customization becomes especially important when dealing with complex animation scenes, custom workflows, or tools that require specific configurations.

Well, this flexibility comes with a trade-off. You need to handle everything yourself, from software setup and licensing to environment configuration,… and troubleshooting when things go wrong. It’s not the kind of solution for someone who just wants a quick, one-click render.

Overall, IaaS render farms tend to suit users who already have technical experience and structured workflows, such as advanced artists or studios. If having full control over your pipeline is a priority, this model can deliver powerful results, especially for demanding animation projects.

Software as a Service (SaaS) render farm

A SaaS render farm is a cloud-based rendering solution where everything is already set up for you. The step is just simply upload your scene, make sure everything is prepared correctly, and let the system handle the rendering process. 

What I appreciate most about SaaS is how smooth and efficient the workflow becomes. I don’t need to deal with installing software or configuring systems. Most common 3D software and render engines are already supported, so once the file is submitted, rendering can begin almost immediately. This is especially useful when I need quick turnaround times or when I’m handling multiple animation projects at once.

However, this convenience also comes with certain limitations. Because everything is controlled by the provider, I usually have less flexibility when it comes to custom plugins, specific software versions, or unique pipeline requirements. For standard animation projects, this isn’t a problem, but for more complex or highly customized workflows, SaaS can feel somewhat restrictive compared to IaaS. In addition, SaaS platforms typically don’t detect issues such as corrupted scenes, missing assets, incorrect settings, or broken links, so the final output differed from what I saw on my local machine or what I expected the output would be. In this case, I had to pay extra costs to re-render from scratch.

SaaS render farms are a great choice when speed, simplicity, and reliability are the main priorities. If the goal is to render animation efficiently without dealing with technical setup, especially for freelance work or tight deadlines, SaaS is often the most practical solution.

Which type works best for your animation projects?

From my experience, there’s no “best” option, it depends on how you work and what your animation project requires. If your workflow is complex, involves simulations, or needs specific tools and configurations, IaaS gives you the control and flexibility to manage everything exactly the way you want. On the other hand, if your scenes are well-optimized and you just need to render quickly without dealing with technical setup, SaaS can save a lot of time and effort.
